Bickford joined the University of Oklahoma when he finished his high school education. In December 1993, he graduated with a Bachelor Of Science and Master Of Science degree in Meteorology. While in college, his interest in strong storms continued to grow. For two spring seasons, he was a storm chaser for KOCO in Oklahoma City.
Bickford worked for KSWO in Lawton as the weekend meteorologist for a year and a half. He also worked as the captain of the University of Oklahoma water polo team. Further, he studied at the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

He was a radio personality for KXDG-FM in Joplin as a hobby and worked there for years.
