Dana Tyler is an American journalist currently working as a news anchor and reporter at WCBS-TV in New York City, where she anchors the station’s 6 PM newscast.

Tyler is honored to celebrate her 28th year at CBS 2 as an important member of the news team. Dana received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Association of Black Journalists in August of 2014. In 2012, for co-hosting “The Tunnel to Towers Memorial Run,” she won a New York Emmy Award for Community Service. “She was nominated in 2012 for her report “Amy’s Story” in the Wellness Special: “Run for the Cure,” in addition to several New York Emmy Award nominations over the years. For anchoring the Breaking News Item, she won two Emmy Awards in 2010: “Flight 1549 Lands in the Hudson River” and for her reporting of “Heather and Stacy’s Story” in “Race for the Cure.”

In 2003, Tyler won Emmy Awards for anchoring the “New York City Blackout” Breaking News Report and for anchoring the Outstanding Single Newscast: “CBS 2 News at 11: City Hall Shooting.” In 1996, she received an Emmy for anchoring the “New York City Subway Firebombing” Outstanding Single Newscast.

In 2011, in her annual “Salute to News Veterans,” Tyler was honored by the Friars Club. In 2007, she was recognized in the annual McDonald’s salute to “Black Broadcast Legends,” and in 2006, for her story on Broadway’s “The Color Purple,” she received a New York Association of Black Journalists Award. Tyler organized the “Tunnel to Towers Run” and engaged in CBS 2 funded programs, including the Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure,” which raises awareness about breast cancer, in addition to general assignment news and cover stories.

For more than a decade, Tyler served on the Board of Directors of Learning Champions, a 7,000-member volunteer group devoted to the advancement of public school children in New York City. In 2008, she received an honorary doctorate in Letters from Staten Island’s St. John’s University. In 2007, in Worthington, Ohio, she was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater, Worthington High School. She was awarded the Alumni Award for Outstanding Service in 2001 by the School of Management of Boston University, from where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in marketing and broadcast journalism.

As an intern at WCOL Radio and WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, Tyler started her broadcasting career. For her role on the iconic “Heart of Ohio” shows, she was a general assignment reporter and anchor for WBNS and won an Ohio Valley Emmy Award in 1988 as Outstanding Anchor. She and the late Reggie Harris became New York’s first African-American anchor team on WCBS-TV in 1990. She is proud to celebrate the courageous and historic past of her great-grandpa. Ralph Waldo Tyler was a Columbus newspaper writer and editor and the first accredited African-American war correspondent to write during World War I on African-American troops deployed overseas.
