Dave Spahr Career
Spahr works for KRON4 News where she serves the station as a Weekend Morning Meteorologist. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is a proud graduate of Ashland University in Ohio where he began his broadcast journey. He made his first stops working in Jacksonville, Florida where he stopped for a Summer postgraduate internship. This was in order to learn the ropes of local TV news.
Spahr’s first job while in Fort Smith, Arkansas began with a bang as on his journey there, he passed a strong line of thunderstorms that produced tornadoes. After crossing the Mississippi, which had whitecaps, he landed on the other side of the front with blue skies and cool winds.
In his brief tenure working as a news and weather guy, he was privileged to interview then-Governor Bill Clinton. Later on, he was off again to Columbus, Georgia. When near the infantry base of Fort Benning, during the first Gulf War, plenty of daily news was generated by continuous troop deployments. Dave was also live for coverage of the March 1993 “Storm of the Century event which produced heavy snows up the East Coast. While he was in the area, there was a “thunderstorm.”
In the mid-’90s, he went on to move to Springfield, Missouri. He states that not only did the weather change every ten minutes but also very consistent over the region. At that time, it was unheard of to have a Winter Storms Watch at the same time as a Tornado Watch on the other side of the viewing area. For him, springs were often filled by very loud thunderstorms, even in the dead of night, which was followed by a sunny morning. In the winter, he suggests that people should always be on the lookout for nasty ice storms.
The late ’90s saw him move to Raleigh, North Carolina which at that time, was a mini Hurricane Alley. He states that the Winters provided challenges with the “Appalachian Wedge,” which is a recipe for ice storms. the month of January 2000 saw a major “bomb” develop off the East Coast(deep-low-pressure system). He states that in 24 hours, almost two feet of snow paralyzed the Raleigh-Durham area(the Triangle) for days.
Later on, in the year 2003, he made a move out West, where he was doing morning and noon weather in Palm Springs. It was hot and sometimes dry. In mid and late July, the monsoon machine fired up. This sent a sticky hot air to the Coachella Valley. The hot air often sparked off “air mass thunderstorms.”
Dave states that sometimes the air mass thunderstorms would be severe. The month of July 2005 saw his Spahr’s team being the first on and last off-air, as nervous residents were being shaken by an evening gust, spawned by Arizona Monsoon thunderstorms. This was bringing winds of more than 40mph to the Coachella Valley. He states that the weather fronts in the late Springs which often don’t produce rain can deliver winds, blowing sand and dust, often shuttling down major roads.
Asides from his career in television, he has moonlighted as a radio DJ through the years for some half a dozen stations. This was while working CHR/Hot and AC/Adult Mixes. Away from work, he enjoys history and is a very amateur body surfer. Asides from those, he is an avid C-SPAN junky.
