David Sawyer Biography

David Sawyer is an American meteorologist working for WNCT as a Storm Team 9 meteorologist since joining the station in July 2009. Previously, he worked as a chief meteorologist at WIAT-TV CBS 42 in Birmingham, Alabama, for 5 years.

David Sawyer Education

Sawyer joined the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1984 after finishing high school. In 1988, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry. There, he worked as a student manager for Varsity Football.

After receiving his Bachelor’s, Sawyer furthered his studies at East Carolina University. In 1990, he graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Science Education. While there, he served as a graduate assistant and varsity football coach. He joined North Carolina State University in 1994, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology in 1995.

Sawyer works for WNCT as a Storm Team 9 meteorologist. In addition to that role, he anchors WNCT 9 On Your Side across multiple dayparts throughout the week. He is thrilled to keep WNCT 9 Storm Team Weather viewers updated with precise forecasts and to warn of any severe weather threats every day. He has more than 30 years of forecasting experience.

Sawyer previously served WNCT as a morning and noon meteorologist from 1990 to 2004. He was also responsible for the weekend weather anchor duties. During this time, he worked with the award-winning nonstop broadcast of eastern North Carolina’s worst natural crisis after Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

Sawyer will always feel honored to have served the viewers facing such devastating losses and inconveniences from the floodwaters that covered the WNCT 9 On Your Side viewing region.

Sawyer moved to Birmingham, Alabama, for a chief meteorologist role at WIAT-TV CBS 42 in 2004. He spent the next 5 years forecasting intricate weather patterns in central Alabama, including outbreaks of severe weather that often involved tornadoes. On July 27, 2009, he was privileged to return to WNCT 9 On Your Side.

Aside from enjoying studying and forecasting the weather, Sawyer has a passion for teaching and serving others. This passion amplifies his desire to participate in school assemblies or other community gatherings when invited.
