Heid attended Moon Senior High School in 2014 where he graduated in 2018 with a diploma. He also worked as a sideline reporter, co-host, and play-by-play announcer at MCA TV. Later on, he enrolled at Penn State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism in 2022.

Derek began his professional career at Big Ten Network Student U where he served as a broadcaster from October 2019 to May 2022. During his tenure there, he covered every major sports event that happened in Penn State Women’s Lacrosse and Soccer. Earlier, Heid worked as a sports program intern at SiriusXM from January 2022 to April 2022. Before that, he worked for Penn State Commradio as a production director. He also controlled projects and promoted commercial bumps.
In addition to working at Penn State Commradio, Derek also served as a sports reporter intern at the Centre Daily Times. He worked there from June 2021 to August 2021 where he writes local sports stories. For his excellent work at the station, he was awarded several awards for his storytelling and collegiate broadcasting. Apart from working as a journalist, Heid worked at AAF Analzyed as a manager and on-air personality from December 2018 to April 2019.
