Derek Staahl is an American Anchor/Reporter working for Gray TV where he serves the station as an Anchor/Reporter since September 2022. Prior to this, he was working for 10News Live Center/KGTV where he served the station as an Evening Anchor keeping San Diegans informed with breaking news updates. There, he Anchors the 4, 5, and 6 PM Newscasts. He joined the 10News team working as an anchor and reporter in the month of September 2019.

Staahl works for Gray TV where he served the station as an Anchor/Reporter. Previously, he worked with the 10News team where he serves the station as an Anchor/Reporter. Between the years 2011 and 2015, he reported for San Diego 6 on the CW and rose to weekend anchor and investigative reporter.
During that time, he was also privileged to earn a regional Emmy for wildfire coverage and launch a reporting partnership with U.S. Marshals which led to the arrests of numerous violent felons. Asides from this, he also broke major stories in the Mayor Bob Filner scandal and his investigative efforts were featured in a UT San Diego article.
Prior to joining the 10News team, he spent about four years working with CBS duopoly in Phoenix. Asides from this, he also appeared live on CNN and HLN on major breaking news stories in Arizona. This includes the search for a serial killer and volatile protests downtown.
He was also honored with an Emmy and an award from the Arizona Education Association for a series of investigative reports on the Scottsdale Unified School District in which four administrators resigned. After this scandal, legislators changed state laws related to school spending and construction contracts.
He kick-started his reporting career working with WKOW located in Madison. There, he states that he traces TV News back to his parents who both had long careers in “show business.” His mom toured as a backup singer for Grammy-winning R&B artist Lou Rawls. His dada performed sketch comedy in Chicago’s famous Second City theater alongside John Candy and Bill Murray prior to launching a career as a screenwriter.
Away from work, he enjoys beach volleyball, cheering on his USC Trojans, hiking, and softball. Asides from this, he also played quads in the Troja Marching Band’s drumline and he continues to play drums. This is despite switching to an electronic kit for the sake of his neighbors.
