Derek Van Dam Biography

Derek Van Dam is an American meteorologist working at CNN. He has been working at the network since joining in September 2014. 

Derek Van Dam Career

Van Dam serves as the weekday and weekend weather anchor at CNN based in Atlanta. In this role, he is in charge of providing science bulletins and weather reports for the network. He is also a “Certified Broadcast Meteorologist” by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Since joining CNN, he has enclosed on several devastating weather events including Hurricane Maria from San Juan, Puerto Rico; Hurricane Nate from Biloxi, Mississippi; Hurricane Harvey from Houston, Texas; and Hurricane Irma from Miami Beach, Florida.

Van Dam also made contributions in Tennessee to the network’s special live coverage of the solar eclipse. The network’s weather team won an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2018 for covering virtual reality coverage of ‘The Eclipse of the Century.’ He also enclosed Hurricane Joaquin in 2015 with the infamous ‘Hurricane Hunters’ U.S. Air Force squadron.

Prior to working at CNN, he worked at eNCA & e.TV where he served as the chief meteorologist and H.O.D Weather from March 2008 to July 2014. Prior to that, he worked at an NBC affiliate in Flint, Michigan/WEYI – NBC25 where he served as the morning meteorologist from January 2005 to February 2008.

Van Dam went to Central Michigan University where he attained his Bachelor of Science, Broadcast Journalism, and Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Meteorology. Whenever he is not working, he enjoys spending his free time with his family and friends.
