Don Ryan Biography
Don Ryan is an American journalist working for WLUC as a host of “The Ryan Report.” He rejoined the station in 2015, having served the station from January 1965 to January 1974 and from September 2003 to September 2008. Previously, he worked for the Marquette City Commission from 2008 to 2014.
Don Ryan Career
Ryan works for WLUC as a host of “The Ryan Report,” a weekly news interview program featuring leaders from government, business, and the community. He has been with the station since the early days of the station.
During his career, he has worked in radio, TV, government, and private industry. For a long time, he has been interested in area economic development. Ryan’s stint in Marquette County radio began when he was a high school sophomore where he served at WJPD in Ishpeming. He worked for WDMJ and WJAN where he was involved in announcing, sales, programming, and management positions from 1957 to 1963.
During his early broadcasting career, he worked for WLUC from 1965 to 1974. There, he started as a news, sports, and weather reporter. Later, he received a promotion to management positions such as operations manager and station manager.
In 1975, Congressman Phil Ruppe appointed him as the district representative. In this role, he represented the congressman at several activities, occasions, and constituent meetings all over the Upper Peninsula. For 12 years, he was on the Ishpeming Board of Education. He was also on the Marquette City Commission from 2008 to 2014.
In 1977, Ryan began working as a public affairs representative at The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. 5 years later, he received a promotion to the position of district manager of public affairs in 1982. He held the position till 2003 when he retired from the company.
In 2003, returned to WLUC as the host and producer of The Ryan Report. However, he left the show after he received an offer to work for the Marquette City Commission. He completed his service there in 2015 and rejoined WLUC. In 2019, WLUC-TV6 & FOX UP granted him the first Carl V. Pellonpaa Lifetime Achievement Award because of his devotion to regional businesses and the community.
Through his interest in economic development, he has worked in leadership positions at the Lake Superior Jobs Coalition, the Lake Superior Community Partnership, the Central Upper Peninsula Job Force Board Operation Action UP, and the Ishpeming Chamber of Commerce.
