Dr. Rick Knabb is an American meteorologist working for The Weather Channel serving as an on-air hurricane expert and tropical program manager. He leads hurricane and tropical storm reporting and provides expert in-depth forecast analyses and updates for the nation’s only 24-hour source of national storm coverage.

Knabb attained his Bachelor’s Degree in Atmospheric Science from Purdue University. He also received his Masters of Science and Doctorate in Meteorologist from Florida State University and completed postdoctoral work at the University of Hawaii.

Knabb is a meteorologist who worked in the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami from 2012 to 2017 where he served as a Director prior to TWC. In 2017, he announced his return to The Weather Channel after leaving the channel for his NHC position in 2012. While in NHC, he warned about tropical cyclones, hurricanes, and the effects they will bring about. He also supervised the development of various programs implemented to change the way the public understands. Additionally, he also directed the development of NHC’s new Potential Tropical Cyclone advisories and Wind Arrival Timing products.

Knabb has also managed to capture the trust, love, and support of his viewers due to his great skills as a meteorologist. During his first term with The Weather Channel, he was the lead in the reporting of several weather events including Hurricane Irene in 2011. While at NHC, he also managed to enclose different weather catastrophes that hit the headlines including Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016

Knabb had also worked in different organizations serving different roles also prior to joining TWC. For instance, he worked for the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu where he served as a Deputy Director. Prior to Honolulu, he served as a Senior Hurricane Specialist and the Science and Operations Officer at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. He also prepared and presented official forecasts during several historic weather events, including Hurricane Katrina reaching category 5 over the Gulf of Mexico in 2005. The Chicago native is also a member of the American Meteorological Society.
