Emily Longnecker Biography
Emily Longnecker is an American journalist working for WTHR as a night-side reporter. She joined the station in October 2007 and has served the station for more than a decade. Previously, she worked for WLWT in Cincinnati, Ohio as a general assignment reporter for 3 years.

Longnecker joined Allegheny College in Meadville in 1991 when she finished her high school education. In 1995, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English and French. She then joined the American University in Washington, D.C. where she graduated with a Master Of Arts degree in Public Policy and Broadcast Journalism.

Further, she has worked as a reporter and anchor for multiple smaller TV markets in upstate New York and Pennsylvania.
Longnecker worked in Cincinnati at the NBC affiliate, WLTW, for three years before moving to Indianapolis. She has been recognized by organizations like the Associated Press Broadcasters Associations in Indiana and Pennsylvania, the Indiana Broadcasters Association, and the Indiana Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
In 2021, Longnecker received an invite to New York City where and her former station in Altoona, Pennsylvania to give an account of her experiences broadcasting the crash of United Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, when she was just a cub reporter. Further, she relayed her broadcasting work on September 11th in “Women Journalists at Ground Zero.”
Longnecker was featured on A&E’s “The First 48” and Investigation Discovery’s series, “The Shift.” During the onset of the pandemic, she interviewed Babyface, a Grammy-awarded musician and singer, via Zoom about his experience fighting COVID. She sees this experience as a memorable career highlight.
Longnecker has worked as a speaker in front of multiple groups in Indianapolis and has assisted in emceeing fundraisers for firms like Coburn Place Safe Haven and The Independence Academy. Recently, she spoke about her experience surviving an assault in broad daylight near downtown Indianapolis, and her life has been affected since that day. She has also worked as a contributing writer for Hope Magazine for Women.

Emily Longnecker Attacked
In July 2016, Longnecker was attacked in downtown Indianapolis in broad daylight. She was attacked by convicted rapist, Robert Shelton, who was released from prison in April after serving 20 years on a 40-year sentence for rape.
As Longnecker was getting out of her car, Robert approached her and asked if he could ask her a question. Assuming that he was asking for money, she told him that she had no money on her. He then attacked her, repeatedly punching her while trying to steal her wallet and attempting to push her back into the car.
Robert stopped and ran around to the front of her car. She then chased him man down the street while screaming. Fortunately, good samaritans stepped in and helped catch and hold Robert until the police could arrest him.
