Austell works for KUSI FOX 5 as a weekend anchor for Good Morning San Diego. His broadcasting career started in San Diego in the early 90s. He then worked for local radio stations before flying over San Diego freeways during the morning and afternoon drive times.
In 1997, Austell worked as a reporter and photographer onboard San Diego’s first news helicopter to be furnished with a gyro-stabilized camera. For the next 10 years, he worked as a “point man” for traffic and breaking news.
In this role, he covered everything including structure fires, high-speed car chases, rescues, and brush. He gained a special viewpoint of the country after spending hours broadcasting in the skies above San Diego. He worked for KNSD as a morning anchor for 8 years. he can relate to the military community since his father served in the Navy.
