Jim Caldwell Career
Caldwell works for WKYT as a morning and noon meteorologist. Additionally, he hosts Everyday Kentucky. During the first 15 years of his life, he wanted nothing more than to work in the medical field, especially Psychology. In one of his elementary school yearbooks, he said that he wanted to be a psychiatrist so that he could see what makes people tick when asked the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Till the age of 15, Caldwell was preparing to go down the medical field, until something changed the course of his career path. At that age, he got the chance to work at WRLV AM/FM in Salyersville where he recorded promos that updated the community on school news. Since he had a desire to work in radio, the event cemented the idea of him working in communications, regardless of TV or radio. He had discovered a passion for broadcasting that he couldn’t deny.
When Caldwell turned 16, he had the chance to taste the broadcasting field early. At the request of his teacher, he worked as the color commentator and statistician after his high school teacher was asked to do play-by-play for the Magoffin County Hornets.
After delivering the color commentary, Caldwell got a job offer at WRLV, where he recorded the evening weather and recorded some commercials. After school, he would only spend two or three hours a day at the station. However, he began spending more time at the station cleaning the station, dabbling in sales, washing the station vehicle, taking out the trash, or writing commercials. Simultaneously, he was live on air from 3 to 6 p.m. every day and shouldered all weekend weather. Later, he earned the role of sports director in 1999 and became the music director in 2000.
After graduating high school and joining college, Caldwell received a call from Tony Turner on one cold February day in 2001, an event that changed his path again. Tony asked him to go to WYMT and interview for the chief weathercaster position. Since he had always found weather interesting, he was excited to put his knowledge to the test.
In late February 2001, Caldwell went to Hazard for the 3rd time to try his hand at TV. On March 12, 2001, he began working for WYMT. In March 2003, Caldwell joined the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association as a member. During his career, he won 3 Associated Press Awards for Best Weather Anchor. He served WYMT for more than 12 years before he joined WKYT.
