During this time of the publication, DeFede earned various awards for his investigative work. In 2002, he changed his career and became a columnist for Miami Herald Metro. There, he worked for the publication for 3 years and left it in 2005.

He joined CBS 4 News in January 2006, and was named Investigative Reporter and host of the Facing South Florida public affairs show. DeFede traveled all over the states of South Carolina, Florida, and New Hampshire covering the presidential election campaign in 2016. His skills saw him land interviews with popular politicians like Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, and Jeb Bush. He has also produced special news shows including The Versace Murder: A South Beach Story, Life and Death at Zoo Miami, and the Last Chance: Boot Camp.

DeFede spent 1 year producing and researching for the Everglades: Where Politics, Money, and Race Collide documentary, airing on CBS4 News in August 2017. He has also written for the Talk Magazine column by Tina Brown.
