Joe Calhoun Biography
Joe Calhoun is a well-known American Chief meteorologist working for WGAL. He is the WGAL News 8 Storm Team’s chief meteorologist and does forecasts on weekdays on WGAL News 8 at 5, 5:30, and 6, WGAL News 8 at 10 on MeTV Susquehanna Valley, WGAL 8.2, and News 8 at 11 pm. He joined the station in August 1987. Joe is a member of the American Meteorological Society and in 1984 he was awarded the Seal of Approval for Television Weathercasting.

He received his education at Frankford High School where he graduated in 1976. After graduating from high school, he attended Pennsylvania State University where he graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology.

Since his joining, he has become one of the area’s favorite weathercasters known for his accurate and personable forecasts. Also, he is an Adjunct Professor at Millersville University since 1990. There, he has been teaching the Broadcast Meteorology (ESI 348) course for more than 20 years in the Department of Earth Sciences. Moreover, he provides a number of hands-on opportunities for the students to practice in real studio situations both at WGAL and at Millersville University studios.
From July 1995 to July 2012, he was a High School Basketball Coach for Manheim Township High School. Joe began his broadcasting career for KETV TV as a Meteorologist from June 1983 to August 1987. There, he was an on-air meteorologist for morning and weekend newscasts. At KETV, he co-produced a 30-minute severe weather safety and awareness program titled “When the Siren Sounds” which won the AK-Sar-Ben Gold Award presented by the Nebraska Broadcasters Association. Also, the program was nominated for the Iris Award by the National Association of Television Program Executives. He then began his meteorological career in 1982 working for Freese-Notis Weather, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa. When he is not working he enjoys golfing, cooking, spending time with his family, and rooting for the Penn State and Philadelphia ball clubs.
