Joe Dashiell is an American journalist working for WDBJ as a senior reporter since late 1990. He has served the station for more than 3 decades. He has served three WDBJ7 bureaus beginning with Lynchburg in the fall of 1980.

Dashiell has worked for WDBJ as a senior reporter since late 1990. He has served three WDBJ7 bureaus beginning with Lynchburg in the fall of 1980. In 1982, he helped found the New River newsroom. Three years later, he relocated to Richmond where he broadcasted the Governor’s Office, Virginia General Assembly, and state politics.
While working in Richmond, he was nominated president of the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association. Dashiell worked in Richmond for 5 years before returning to Roanoke in late 1990. He frequently goes to Richmond to broadcast the General Assembly and other stories of national importance.
In 2009, the Virginia Association of Broadcasters won the George A. Bowles Jr. Distinguished Performance in Broadcast News Award. The Roanoke Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference awarded him the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service Media Award in 2011. The following year, NAACP’s Roanoke Branch acknowledged him during its yearly Citizen of the Year Awards.
Dashiell has also won regional and statewide honors for his reports. For instance, he won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award in 2010 for “Headlines in Hard Times.” In 2014, he won a regional Emmy for Virginia Roots & Tennessee Dreams: The Legacy of Patsy Cline. In addition, he won another regional Emmy for a series on the 30th anniversary of the Flood of ’85 in 2016.
The Blue Ridge Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America gave him the inaugural Adam & Alison Award in 2016. In 2019, the Associated Press granted him the Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award. That same year, he served as an inductee of the Silver Circle of the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
