Dever received musical inspiration from her parents when she was young. Her mother used to play Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill on car trips in Dallas while her father taught harmonization to her and her siblings. She and her sister, Mady, learned piano but she switched to guitar after she received one as a Christmas gift when she was 8. Further, she mentions ABBA and The Cure as inspirations.
Dever and Mady performed in elementary school talent shows under the name Hot Pink. In this magnitude, they did covers from artists like Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. Later, they changed their name to Anime Pearl and did several gigs in small clubs across Los Angeles.
Jason Reitman attended one of their Los Angeles gigs. He began sending songs back and forth with her during the making of Men, Women & Children. At one point, he sent her Nancy Sinatra’s You Only Live Twice, advising that she and Mady perform it. In 2016, Mady and Dever changed their name to Beulahbelle after an ancestor of theirs who had passed as an infant. They first released music under this name in 2018, contributing two cover renditions of You Only Live Twice and an original track titled Let You Go to Reitman’s Tully at his request.
On February 15, 2020, Beulahbelle marketed their official debut single, Raleigh. They directed, produced, and starred in the official music video. On September 10, 2020, they released their second official single, Being You. However, Being You, was their final single release with their overall final release being a feature on a Neil Young and Crazy Horse cover, “Round & Round (It Won’t Be Long)”, by Berg’s daughter, Z Berg (simply titled “It Won’t Be Long”) in 2021. That same year, Dever contributed vocals to four songs for the soundtrack of Dear Evan Hansen as Zoe Murphy. In August 2024, Beulahbelle announced that they were changing their name to Devers with their debut single being Poison.
