Dever started attending an acting school when she was 5 years old after she developed an interest in the performing arts. She also partook in ballet, gymnastics, and ice skating. However, she decided to concentrate on acting after seeing Toni Collette’s performance in The Sixth Sense (1999). Her family relocated to Dallas where she appeared in several commercials before settling in Los Angeles.

Dever’s first significant acting role was portraying Gwen Thompson in  An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong in 2009. In 2011, she had her breakout role starring as Loretta McCready in FX’s Justified. That same year, she joined the cast of Last Man Standing. She started acting in a recurring role since the series’ 7th season, giving here time to concentrate on other film and TV projects.

Dever has also starred in Make It or Break It, Party Down, Modern Family, Private Practice, The Mentalist, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. In 2011, she starred in Cinema Verite, Bad Teacher, and  J. Edgar. The following year, she won three nominations at the 33rd Young Artist Awards for her roles in Bad Teacher, Last Man Standing, and Justified. In 213, she had supporting roles in The Spectacular Now and Short Term 12.

In 2014, Dever starred in Laggies opposite Chloë Grace Moretz and Keira Knightley. That same year, she co-starred in Men, Women & Children. In 2017, she had a supporting role in  Outside In, We Don’t Belong Here, All Summers End, and Detroit. The following year, she had small roles in The Front Runner and Beautiful Boy. In 2019, she starred in Them That Follow, Booksmart, and Unbelievable. Her performance in Unbelievable won her critical praise and a Golden Globe Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film Award nomination. She also won nominations for Critics Choice Television Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries Award,  the BAFTA Rising Star Award, and the TCA Individual Achievement in Drama Award.

Dever starred in Home Movie: The Princess Bride in 2020 to raise money for World Central Kitchen. Later that year, she appeared in Audible’s When You Finish Saving the World where she voiced Rachel. That same year, she appeared in Coastal Elites and joined the cast of Dear Evan Hansen. Further, she starred in an episode of Hulu’s Monsterland.

Dever starred in episode 3 of FX’s The Premise Abbi Miller. She also starred in the titular role in Rosaline. Further, she starred as Betsy Mallum in Hulu’s Dopesick, winning her a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award. In 2023, she starred in  No One Will Save You. In January of the following year, she was revealed to have joined the cast of  The Last of Us as Abby. She will star in See You When I See You and Apple Cider Vinegar in 2025.

Music

Dever received musical inspiration from her parents when she was young. Her mother used to play Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill on car trips in Dallas while her father taught harmonization to her and her siblings. She and her sister, Mady, learned piano but she switched to guitar after she received one as a Christmas gift when she was 8. Further, she mentions ABBA and The Cure as inspirations.

Dever and Mady performed in elementary school talent shows under the name Hot Pink. In this magnitude, they did covers from artists like Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. Later, they changed their name to Anime Pearl and did several gigs in small clubs across Los Angeles. 

Jason Reitman attended one of their Los Angeles gigs. He began sending songs back and forth with her during the making of Men, Women & Children. At one point, he sent her Nancy Sinatra’s You Only Live Twice, advising that she and Mady perform it. In 2016, Mady and Dever changed their name to Beulahbelle after an ancestor of theirs who had passed as an infant. They first released music under this name in 2018, contributing two cover renditions of You Only Live Twice and an original track titled Let You Go to Reitman’s Tully at his request.

On February 15, 2020, Beulahbelle marketed their official debut single, Raleigh. They directed, produced, and starred in the official music video. On September 10, 2020, they released their second official single, Being You. However, Being You, was their final single release with their overall final release being a feature on a Neil Young and Crazy Horse cover, “Round & Round (It Won’t Be Long)”, by Berg’s daughter, Z Berg (simply titled “It Won’t Be Long”) in 2021. That same year, Dever contributed vocals to four songs for the soundtrack of Dear Evan Hansen as Zoe Murphy. In August 2024, Beulahbelle announced that they were changing their name to Devers with their debut single being Poison.
