Karen Larsen Biography

Karen Larsen is an American six-time Emmy award-winning anchor/reporter working at KJRH where she serves as a weekday evening anchor at 5, 6, and 10 p.m. She joined the KJRH News team in May 1996, after previously working at the Junior League of Tulsa as a community advisory board member.

Larsen has been working at KJRH for almost 20 years as an evening news anchor and reporter. While working at KJRH, she has covered events throughout northeastern Oklahoma while concentrating on breaking news, health, and early childhood education issues. She also lends a hand in writing for the weekdays at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts.

Over the years, she has received six Emmy awards, a national and regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio and Television Digital News Association, and honors from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters, and the Society of Professional Journalists.

California is her native home and during her leisure time, she enjoys searching out antique treasures, gardening, working on home improvement projects, and reading books of any genre. While working at KJRH, she has produced, hosted, and written a number of award-winning documentaries exclusively for health and welfare issues.

In addition, she developed another documentary that was focused on four people fighting four types of cancer. The programs won regional, state, and national awards such as the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award from the RTNDA.

Not long after, she spent a year writing and producing the documentary entitled Shaking the Silence: Prevention, Awareness, and Education of Shaken Baby Syndrome. While working with talented photojournalists, she followed a young father who fractured the skull of his girlfriend’s baby from his arrest to his conviction to the day he reported to prison.

In addition, she also followed two young parents who struggled to cope with their baby’s brain damage and health challenges after the babysitter shook him violently and dropped him in his crib. Furthermore, the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters and the Society of Professional Journalists awarded her documentary called Shaking the Silence, the Best Documentary award.

He liked to tell stories of his family moving to California during the Dust Bowl and then “riding the railroads” back to Oklahoma because he was homesick.
