Kevin Craig Biography

Kevin Craig is an American Meteorologist working with FOX17 News where he serves the station as the Chief Meteorologist since 2001. He also works with FOX47 News where he has been serving the station as a Meteorologist since January 2021.

Kevin Craig Education

Kevin began his studies in broadcast meteorology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and at Mississippi State University. He received his meteorological certification with honors in 2003 and is only a few credits away from earning a master’s degree in geosciences. He graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit with a Bachelor of Arts in Radio/TV/Film Communications.

Craig works with FOX17 News where he serves the station as the Chief Meteorologist and with FOX17 News where he serves the station as a Meteorologist. He happens to be among the few people in the state that have earned the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist(CBM) seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society.

He kick-started his broadcasting career in the year 1993 when he was working with WCAR radio in Detroit serving as a board operator and part-time news anchor. Asides from that, he continued in radio news working as an anchor/reporter in Northwest Ohio where he worked for about three years. This was until taking his first television job in Clarksburg, West Virginia.

Previously, he also worked as a News Reporter/Anchor for about a year before an opportunity came up to fill in for the weather department. He, then, worked as a morning weather anchor/science reporter at WIFR-TV in Rockford, Illinois in the year 1996. Craig was later on hired to be the morning weather anchor in Madison, Wisconsin in the year 1998 at WKOW-TV and at a private firm called Weather Central.

Later on, he went on to join Fox 17 News where he served the station as a Weekend Meteorologist for about 15 years. Asides from this, he also moved into the Midday/4 PM/5 PM shift in 2015. The month of March 2018 saw him being promoted to the position of Chief Meteorologist.

He has also worked as a fill-in on all shifts, and producer, and also conducts school presentations.  Asides from this, he has also worked as a producer for upbeat, fun, and informative personal feature reports in his signature series West Michigan Stories. This series ran for about four years between 2012 and 2016.

Craig’s forecasts on FOX 17 News are typically high-energy educational and informative. He states that if he can’t be excited about giving the forecast, he can’t expect people to be excited about watching it. Craig was the longest-running weekend anchor on any West Michigan station in sports, weather, and news. He is also the longest, most tenured anchor for FOX 17 having worked for the station for more than 18 years.

Kevin has, additionally, reported everything from Superstorm Sandy to 20-foot waves on Lake Michigan, severe storms, blizzards, ice storms, tornadoes, lightning strikes, drought, flooding, and as a host of other news-related items. The Detroit native enjoys spending time on the beach or lake, or on the boat and is self-taught on the piano and guitar.
