Melendez joined the University of Alabama in 1979 when she finished her high school education, In 1983, she graduated with a Bachelor Of Arts degree in Journalism. Next, she joined the University of Wisonsin-Milwaukee where she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Communication and Media Studies in 1985. From 1984 to 1985, she was a Production Specialist at WTMJ-TV.

In 1999, she won an Emmy and RTNDA for “Nicholas’ Gift of Life”, the story of a Bay Area boy whose organs were donated to seven Italian receipts. She then received the Latina Media Person of the Year Award in 1992, from New York University, the Asociacio de Cronistas de Espectaculos Award for Reporter of the Year, and the Oustanding Person in Communications Award from the Puerto Rican Institute of New York. Since October 1989, she has volunteered for Charities and Professional Organizations as an Emcee.
Before joining KGO-TV, she worked as a Senior Correspondent and Substitute News Anchor at CNN Spanish from October 1989 to May 1994. There, she started as a correspondent in Atlanta and worked up to Bureau Chief of CNN-Spanish in New York. Also, she was their substitute anchor. During her time there, she covered world events such as the Pope’s visit to Mexico and the Persian Gulf.
Melendez was in the famine in Somalia and traveled extensively to Latin America for the network. Before that, she worked for WSJN Channel 24 as an Evening Anchor and News Reporter from October 1986 to October 1989. From January 1986 to October 1986, she was an Assistant News Producer at Wapa Television.
