Say the Word, Say the Name had first-person perspectives of racist encounters and listed names of people who passed away in racially motivated slayings. For the Race in Chicago television specials, the National Alliance for Women in Media recognized her and her co-producers.

Through her reporting on Sex Trafficking in Chicago, Brooks has received various awards. For instance, the Radio Television and Digital News Association (RTDNA) gave her a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award. Also, she received a national Gracie Award. Her investigative work on sexual brutality problems led to NBCChicago.com’s Survivor’s Project which had stories of sexual violence survivors who shared their experiences and road to healing. The project received the Illinois Broadcasters Association’s Silver Dome Award and RTDNA’s Regional Edward R. Murrow Award.
