Mark Collins is an American meteorologist working for News4JAX as a meteorologist since joining the station in September 2016. Previously, he worked in marine research at the Florida Institute of Oceanography.

Mark Collins Education

Collins joined Florida State University in 1994 when he finished his high school education. In 1996, he graduated with a Bachelor Of Science degree in Meteorology. In 1998, he joined Mississippi State University where he learned how to prepare for Jacksonville’s explosive convective weather pattern.

Collins works for News4JAX as a meteorologist. This serves as his second stint with the station. His career with the station started in 2010 when he served the station as a meteorologist. Previously, he worked in marine research at the Florida Institute of Oceanography. In this role, he deployed some of the buoys in the Gulf that report weather data in his weather reports. Before that, he worked in Tampa, Florida, at WTSP for four years.

Since 2003, he has broadcasted storms in Jacksonville. During his career, he has broadcasted all corners of the state. He was present in Jacksonville during the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons. Before that, he worked for Miami’s WTVJ as a weather anchor and forecasted weather for Miami’s WFOR. While in Tallahassee in the late 90s, he created the weather program at Florida’s News Channel’s statewide cable network start-up in the late 1990s.

His passion for the weather started after he experienced numerous weather events. Hurricane Elena in 1985 and the 1993 Storm of the Century sparked his interest in the weather. He recalls the damaged homes and the three days he spent in a shelter as Elena churned 60 miles offshore. His career spotlights include being the first to receive the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist in Jacksonville and flying aboard NOAA’s hurricane hunters.
