Mark Martin Biography
Mark Martin is an American journalist working for WCHS-TV ABC 8 as the sports director since joining the station in 2001. Previously, he served WOAY-TV in Oak Hill as the sports director.

Martin joined Marietta College after finishing his studies at Ripley High School in 1979. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio-Television. During his time in college, he played football for the Pioneers after spending one season at Salem College (now Salem University). In high school, he obtained varsity letters in football and track and field.

Martin has a soft spot for high school sports and feels fortunate to call West Virginia state championship events in wrestling, basketball, volleyball, softball, and track and field. Moreover, he delivers play-by-play broadcasts of the West Virginia State Little League Tournament.
Martin started his journalism journey in his hometown of Ripley, West Virginia, in 1979. During this time, he freelanced for The Jackson Herald. That passion for writing has stayed with him to this day. In this capacity, he writes game stories, features, and columns for The Jackson Herald and The Jackson Star News. The West Virginia Sports Writers Association honored him with the 2022 Gene Morehouse Award for his contributions as a writer.

After graduating from college, Martin got his start in radio as a sportscaster and newscaster at multiple stations before transitioning into TV. Since then, he has been honored for his work in both mediums by the West Virginia Broadcasters Association, the Ohio Associated Press, the National Sports Media Association (formerly NSSA), the West Virginia Press Association, and the Associated Press of the Virginias.
Martin received the West Virginia Broadcasters Association’s Dale B. Miller Award in 2023, acknowledging him as the state’s top broadcaster. He has also received an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Ohio Valley Chapter) and three other nominations.
Besides his broadcasting work, Martin is a published author. He authored a book detailing the NFL coaching career and life of the late Paul Lanham. Since 2009, he has been Toastmaster for the West Virginia Sports Writers Association Victory Awards Dinner, the longest tenure in the dinner’s history. Also, he occasionally works as an MC for sports banquets across the area.
Martin serves as a proud member of the Ripley High School Viking Football Hall of Fame and the West Virginia Athletic Coaches Association North-South All-Star Football Classic Hall of Fame. He is thankful to share the stories of athletes and communities across West Virginia.
