His fascination with the weather began when he was a child growing up on Long Island, a region that was crippled by the 1978 Great New England Blizzard. The blizzard brought 29 inches of snow to Stony Brook, his hometown. While students moved away from the windows when ferocious lightning struck the pitch black sky in 3rd grade, he ran towards them. Oblivious to the teacher’s warnings, he was later sent to the principal’s office. In 1985, Hurricane Gloria cemented his idea of becoming a meteorologist. He recalls watching the eye of the storm cross the central part of Long Island as power lines and trees came down.
After graduating college, DiNardo joined WKTV in Utica, New York, as an on-air meteorologist. There, he started by covering weekend weather for a year, which eventually led to a promotion to morning and noon weather forecasts. Eventually, he was promoted to Chief Meteorologist, a role he held for seven years. In total, he spent 11 years in Utica, where the weather was challenging, especially forecasting lake-effect snow.
