Matt Franklin Biography
Matt Franklin is an American journalist working for WJRT as an anchor of ABC12 News at Five, Six, and Eleven. He joined the station in June 2004 as a general assignment reporter in the Saginaw bureau and has served the station for over a decade. Previously, he was a freelance reporter at WNEM TV5- MY5 in Saginaw, Michigan for 2 years.

Franklin joined Central Michigan University in August 2000 when he finished his high school education. In May 2004, he graduated with a Bachelor Of Applied Arts degree in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts. In college, he was involved with the Radio Television Digital News Association CMU Chapter.

Franklin works for WJRT as an anchor of ABC12 News at Five, Six, and Eleven. Upon joining the station, he first worked as a general assignment reporter in the Saginaw bureau. Later, he relocated to Flint where he was the weekend morning news anchor and anchor of First at Four.
Franklin has covered the changing times in Mid-Michigan during his time at WJRT. Concentrating on the auto industry and just labor practices, he covered Delphi Automotive and General Motors’s bankruptcies and turnarounds and their effects on union workers and families in Mid-Michigan. He has had many unique moments in his career including having a one-on-one with Vice President Joe Biden in 2011.
Franklin broadcasted the latest vehicle exhibits and auto trends during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Aside from his anchoring role at WJRT, he hosts various events on ABC12 including the Frankenmuth Auto Fest, the Bay City Fireworks Festival, Back to the Bricks, and Flint’s Holiday Pops.
In 2021, Franklin attained an Emmy for his work on WJRT’s special, “The Path Forward” which surveyed matters on diversity, race, and reform calls after civil unrest in 2020. The Michigan Associated Press gave him its Best Anchor Award in 2019. Additionally, he has won many Michigan Association of Broadcasters awards.
In 2014, Franklin served as an inductee of the inaugural “10 Under 10 Class” at his alma mater, Central Michigan University. In this role, he was acknowledged for his career and devotion to the community. He attributes most of his triumphs to the CMU community.
Franklin works on the board of directors of Central Michigan University’s Alumni Association. Moreover, he works on the board of directors of the Whaley Children’s Center which benefits abused, neglected, and at-risk foster children by providing housing.
