Micah Materre Biography
Micah Materre is an American Emmy award-winning journalist and anchor of the WGN Evening News at Five and Six and the WGN News at Nine and Ten. Before being appointed anchor of the WGN News at Nine in 2009, she was co-anchor of WGN Midday News from January 2003 to October 2009.
Micah Materre Career
Materre has been working at Chicago WGN-TV, since joining in January 1998 as a WGN Morning News co-anchor and medical reporter. She has anchored all of the newscasts at WGN, and also covering entertainment news and special assignment stories, including the historic inauguration of America’s first black President. Besides, She reports and co-produces the “Chicago’s Very Own” bi-weekly segment for WGN News and she is the host of WGN’s public affairs program, “People to People”.
She is one of Chicago’s very own as she was born and grew up in the city. She spent eight years at WJBK-TV in Detroit where she was the main anchor and general assignment reporter. While at WJBK, His work garnered many awards and accolades, including an Emmy and an award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. Before moving to Motor City, She cut her teeth in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor.
Materre began her career in broadcasting in 1983 at an NPR affiliate, producing, WBEZ radio in Chicago and reporting for four years. Besides, she taught radio production at Columbia College. She has more than 30 years of experience as a journalist and broadcaster.
Materre has been featured in several local and national publications over the years, including Glamour, New York Times Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Ebony, ‘Who’s Who in Black Chicago, Today’s Chicago Woman, Michigan Avenue Magazine, and RedEye.
Materre serves as a commentator, mistress of ceremonies, and honorary chairperson to several community and civic organizations across Chicagoland. She is on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Children’s Choir and serves on Tutoring Chicago’s Advisory Board. Materre is a member of the civic organization, Incorporated, Links, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the National Association of Black Journalists.
