Mike Missanelli is an American former sports radio personality who recently worked at ESPN. He gave an interview in January 2022 stating that he had plans to retire, and true to his words, he retired later that year. On May 31, 2022, he publicized that his contract at 97.5 was set to expire and hence left the network.

Missanelli attended Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), where he played second base for the Penn State Nittany Lions. In 1977, he received his bachelor’s degree from Penn State. He also graduated from Widener University’s Delaware Law School in 1986, while working for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Missanelli recently worked at the ESPN affiliate, 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia where he served as the afternoon host. Prior to his tenure at ESPN affiliate, 97.5 The Fanatic, he worked at 610 WIP as a sports radio personality as well as at The Philadelphia Inquirer serving as a sports journalist. He started his career at the Philadelphia Inquirer where he served as a writer.

He, later on, transitioned into radio and started off by working on-air at 610 WIP. While at WIP, he criticized David Akers who is a Philadelphia Eagles kicker, during an interview. In this interview, he criticized  David Akers for not being “a real athlete” and called him a “girl” as well as referring to him as “just a kicker”. In 2006, he was fired after he allegedly hit the producer working at 610 WIP.

After losing his job at 610 WIP, he started his own show alongside comedian Joe Conklin on 93.3 WMMR. In addition to his roles at 93.3 WMMR, he joined PHL 17 in 2000 where he served as a sports anchor and director. He left the station in 2003 and joined ESPN in January 2010 and served as the host of the station’s midday show. In 2018, the midday show started being simulcasted on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

In 2017, he was fired by ABC from his weekly gig after he stated that it was “unnatural” for a female journalist to call an NFL game. He got into a heated debate with sports update anchor Natalie Egenolf and producer Tyrone Johnson in May 2020 about the story where a white woman called the police on a black man, who was birdwatching. It could also be seen that Missanelli was insulting and cursing at Johnson during the debate.

On May 31, 2022, he publicized that he would be retiring and leaving his journalism career. However, in September 2022, he publicized that he joined Rush Street Interactive, a Chicago-based gaming company so as to represent its brand Bet Rivers Network. He is also expected to transition to podcasting and distribute the content via several outlets.
