Mindy Basara is an American anchor and reporter at WBAL-TV 11 News. She has been working for the station since April 1998.

Basara serves as the morning news anchor and specialty reporter at WBAL-TV. In this role, she encloses medical stories and also contributes to exploring issues related to mental health “Maryland Peace of Mind”. She has been working for the station for about 11 years before leaving the station to focus more on her health. She then rejoined the station after her health was better.

14 years ago while she was pregnant with her daughter Lindsey, Mindy suffered a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), it was a life-threatening blood clot in her left leg, “My left leg was killing me. It kept getting worse and worse,” she said. Basara did not understand why that happened, she said that her leg never felt normal again until she started having conversations with Dr. Kurtis Kim,

“When you and I talked about your symptoms and your left leg, I fairly was certain you probably, most likely have May-Thurner-related DVT, and the symptoms that are coming with it,” Kim said. They started the procedure which began with a venous ultrasound, which looks inside the vein.

“We do that with a small stick, as we talked about, and through there, we do all of the work of investigating the compression with your iliac veins in your left leg or not, and that gets to be very accurate to a percentage degree of how compressed they are, and based on that, we decide whether we should stent or not,” Kim said.

Kim and his team put in three stents, two on the left side and one on the right and the improvement was immediate. Kim warmed Basara that she would experience lower back pain because of the open vein pressing on the spine. When the back pain subsided her leg felt different the numbness and tingling sensation was gone and an ultrasound confirmed a completely normal blood flow.
