Nicole Crites Career

Crites works for 3TV as a weeknight anchor for Arizona’s Family. Also, she serves as the primary special projects enterprise and investigative contributor. She sees journalism as a passion, honor, and devotion to storytelling, engaging the spirit & goal of every person she depicts to provide greater context and viewpoint to the world.

Though she has interviewed many newsmakers & celebrities over the years, Crites really enjoys profiling humble heroes who never highlight the amazing things they’ve done. This is one of the reasons she has given over 10 years to serving on the board for Military Assistance Mission(MAM), which delivers financial aid and support to Arizona military families. She also donates countless hours and weekends as an MC for yearly charitable fundraisers for causes close to her heart, including Alzheimer’s research, law enforcement, health care, military, and small business & leadership endeavors.

After being a morning anchor in Spokane, Crites returned to Arizona to start a family and report for KPHO, CBS 5. Later, she was promoted to morning anchor. Moreover, she received Emmys for her field anchoring of the 2011 assassination attempt of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her ‘Keeping the Promise’ series that displayed the challenges and triumphs of military families and veterans.

Crites flourishes on anchoring hours and breaking news of unscripted coverage, including the controversial SB-1070 riots, the death of Sen. John McCain, the disputed 2020 election, and the memorial service for the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who passed away in the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire.

Crites began anchoring Good Evening Arizona when CBS 5 merged with 3TV in Arizona’s first duopoly. She was later promoted to main evening anchor, where she continued receiving Emmys for breaking news and feature reporting, with over 20 years of anchoring at the same station.

Early Career;

Crites’s curiosity during her formative years led her to an internship in high school with the sports department at KVOA in Tucson. During her internship in Tucson, Crites learned editing, wrote packages, and interviewed local sports legends like former University of Arizona head basketball coach Lute Olson. Also, she learned how to appreciate the core of the newsroom, working on the assignment desk, chasing leads, listening to scanners, developing sources, and pulling public records to ask experts better questions for a stable story.

Crites interned at 48 Hours in New York, where she got a taste of network news. She was the only intern assigned out of state to pursue leads she pitched, and one of only two who worked in off-hours for breaking news. This enabled her to book live guests when JFK Jr’s plane crashed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard in 1999. This experience cemented her deep-rooted drive and second nature to follow and anticipate big stories, as well as break and reveal them.

Crites declined her first paid TV job offer as an editor to keep working for free to train and refine her reporting skills. During her senior year in college, she landed a weekend assignment editor and part-time reporter job at KVOA. After graduation, she was hired to report in a comparable market at KREM in Spokane, Washington, within months. There, she covered stories that gained national attention, like the lawsuit to bankrupt the Aryan Nations and the case of infamous Serial Killer, Robert Yates.

When terrorists struck on 9/11, Crites went to Ground Zero alongside a group of Red Cross volunteers. She spent 2 years taking a whole roll of film atop the World Trade Center Towers as an intern in Manhattan. She then covered the rubble in an act of war that led to a 2-decade conflict in the Middle East.
