Royal Norman Biography

Royal Norman is an American Award-winning meteorologist working for Arizona’s Family as the chief meteorologist. Previously, he worked as the chief meteorologist at WXIA-TV.

Royal Norman Education

Norman joined Arizona State University after finishing his high school education. In 1984, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology and Climatology.

Royal Norman Career

Norman works for Arizona’s Family as the chief meteorologist. In this role, he anchors First Alert Weather at 5 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. During the holiday season, he is at a Christmas Angel tree, motivating everyone to “earn their wings.”

Norman first came to Arizona with his wife in the summer of 1981. While driving into town on that hot August afternoon, the duo encountered a big dust storm. Watching the sky darkened, they said to each other that it was going to rain, which didn’t happen. Thus, they were introduced to Arizona weather.

After graduating from college, Norman began his career at 3TV as the weekend meteorologist in the summer. He also received his American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for both TV and Radio Broadcasting. While at 3TV, he saw the Mill Avenue Bridge collapse into the raging Salt River, covered a live tornado from the station’s helicopter, and reported on the eruption of Mount Kilauea in Hawaii. He also worked as part of the original crew of Good Morning Arizona.

In 1996, Norman and his family relocated to Atlanta, where he worked as the chief meteorologist at WXIA-TV. He enjoyed living near the East Coast because of chasing hurricanes, something that never happens in Arizona. Following a short stint in Atlanta, he returned to 3TV in 2001.

During his career, Norman has been honored with several accolades, including seven Emmys for weather reporting and being inducted into the Southwest Rocky Mountain NATAS Silver Circle in 2010. In 2017, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Arizona State University College of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning. Also, he was an honoree for the 2025 Arizona Media Hall of Fame.
