Noreen Turyn is an American journalist working for WSET as the senior anchor and managing editor. She joined the station in 1990 as a reporter and has served the station for more than 3 decades. Previously, she worked as an assignment editor at WMAR in Baltimore, Maryland, for more than a year.

During her career, she has won awards, including an Emmy Award and a Virginia Association of Broadcasters Award for “What Happened to Johnny?” in the 2022 demise of Lynchburg resident Johnny Cashman. In 2012, the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters nominated her as the Best Anchor of the Year” for the state of Virginia.

Turyn’s series, “The Forbidden Family,” won her Scripps Howard Excellence Award and the regional Edward R. Murrow Award. The series explored coerced sterilizations in Virginia to the 1970s based on the bogus science of Eugenics. This report prompted Governor Mark Warner’s full apology for he once government-financed and accepted practice. After that series, she did the “Righting the Wrong” series, which won her the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Association’s Superior Investigative Reporting Award.

In 2008, Turyn won the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Association’s Douglas Southall Freeman Public Service Award for her series, “The Lyme Controversy.” The series follows the fight between medical groups over the diagnosis and treatment of an illness that’s reached epidemic levels, causing many viewers to realize that’s what was ailing them and getting the treatment they need for recuperation.

Turyn has held interviews with many governors and met some influential people. Above all, she has loved the many fascinating people she has met over the years in Virginia in her feature “The Heart of Virginia Report.” After graduating college, she kickstarted her career in Washington, D.C., serving WJLA behind the screen. Further, she worked as a radio news reporter in Florida and was a television assignment editor at WMAR in Baltimore before relocating to Lynchburg for her reporting career.

Active in the community, Turyn works as the MC at many fundraisers, events, and awards dinners all over Central Virginia, including the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities’ yearly Humanitarian Awards dinner. Previously, she presided over the board of directors for the Ellington Fellowship Playhouse for numerous years and was on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia for over 10 years.
