Rachel Maddow Biography
Rachel Maddow is an American host and liberal political commentator working at MSNBC. She is the host of her own nightly television show on MSNBC called The Rachel Maddow Show.
Rachel Maddow Education
Maddow received a degree in public policy from Stanford in 1994. She was awarded the John Gardner Fellowship at graduation. Maddow received the Rhodes Scholarship and began her postgraduate studies at Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1995. She was also awarded a Marshall Scholarship the same year but turned it down in favor of Rhodes.
This made her the first openly lesbian Rhodes Scholarship winner. In 2001, she received a Ph.D. in Philosophy (DPhil) in Politics from Oxford University. Her thesis is titled HIV/AIDS and Health Care Reform in British and American Prison; her supervisor was Lucia Zedner.
Rachel Maddow Radio Career
In 1999, Maddow started her career as a radio host at WRNX (100.9 FM) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She, later on, started hosting “The Dave in the Morning Show”. After hosting “The Dave in the Morning Show,” she started working in Northampton, Massachusetts at WRSI where she served as the host of Big Breakfast for about two years and left in 2004 and joined the new Air America.
During her tenure at the new Air America, she served as the host of “Unfiltered” alongside Lizz Winstead (co-creator of The Daily Show) and Chuck D (of the hip-hop group Public Enemy). However, the show was canceled in March 2005. In April 2005, two weeks after the cancellation of Unfiltered, her radio program aired on the weekday two-hour, “The Rachel Maddow Show” started airing. However, the talk show ended back in 2010.

Maddow serves as the host of her own show by the name of The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. In addition to this role, she also serves as a special event co-anchor alongside Brian Williams. She became a regular panelist on the MSNBC show, Tucker, in June 2005 which was hosted by Tucker Carlson. In addition to this, she previously served as a guest on CNN’s Paula Zahn Now during and after the 2006 elections.
She also worked at The Advocate Newsmagazine where she served as a correspondent. Maddow started serving as a regular panelist and political analyst on MSNBC’s election coverage and MSNBC’s Race for the White House with David Gregory in January 2008. In addition to that, she often served as a contributor on Countdown with Keith Olbermann.
Maddow served as a substitute host for Countdown with Keith Olbermann in 2008. This served as the first program she hosted on MSNBC. In Olbermann’s show’s segment “World’s Best Persons” he ranked her third. She also managed to fill in again for quite a number of broadcasts in July 2008 including for David Gregory as host of Race for the White House.

Maddow launched her own podcast by the name of “Bag Man” in October 2018. Her podcast is produced with MSNBC and concentrates on the 1973 political scandal surrounding Spiro Agnew (former vice President). Furthermore, the film adaptation of the podcast was publicized to be in production in 2022, with Lorne Michaels to produce, Ben Stiller attached to direct and Maddow set to be an executive producer.

In August 2008, MSNBC revealed that The Rachel Maddow Show would replace Verdict with Dan Abrams at 9 p.m. The next month’s slot. It was a nice thing that he did for me, and it’s been valuable for me—it helped me get an advantage over my competitors.” In mid-May 2017, in the wake of a series of conflicts involving the Trump administration, MSNBC outperformed CNN and Fox News in news ratings.
For the week of May 15, the Rachel Maddow Show was the No. 1 non-sports broadcast on cable for the first time. It was dubbed the “America’s wonkiest anchor” who “cut through the chaos of the Trump administration – and became the most trusted name in the news.”Maddow claimed that these problems “are the most serious scandals that any president has ever faced.”
