Richard Engel Biography
Richard Engel is an American journalist and author working for NBC News in New York City as the Chief Foreign Correspondent. He joined the station on April 18, 2008, after serving as the network’s Middle East Correspondent and Beirut bureau chief.

With a Bachelor of Arts in international relations from Stanford University, which he graduated with in 1996, Engel made it his commitment to the Middle East. His attraction to journalism suggested the prospect of playing a part in history rather than barely watching it happen. Engel departed to Cairo, where he got a hand in Egyptian Arabic and worked as a reporter without any editorial control for 4 years.

Since April 2008, Engel has been the main NBC News abroad Senior Foreign Correspondent. Before NBC in May 2003, Engel was a freelance journalist who spent his first 5 months in Baghdad. After that, in 2003 he was the first journalist to uncover the war between the USA and Iraq. He was then given a position as the Middle East correspondent for ABC News and along the way worked as the Beirut bureau chief. The powerful personal narratives of the conflict-affected region told by him were closely related to the causes of the narratives.
Additionally, Engel saw the destructive effect of the Iraq War on so many that he was able to accentuate this complexity and the human cost of fighting himself. Besides this, he got the chance to be in the center of revolutions leading the Arab Spring. In 2004, Engel published his memoir entitled, “A Fist in the Hornet’s Nest”, which is a thrilling story of his stay in Baghdad.
A great acknowledgment to him in the field of journalism is the number of awards he has been given all the time. Through seven News & Documentary Emmy Awards, Engel has been a consistent feature of his reporting style inspired by greatness. Another honor that he has been given is the George Foster Peabody Award, which is an award of high quality and coverage. Besides, he has been awarded two Edward R. Murrow Awards for his excellent reporting and storytelling skills and the Medill Medal for his Courage in Journalism. Furthermore, his profession as an award-winning reporter covering relevant global issues was marked by the winning of prestigious prizes. This award includes; the Daniel Pearl Award, which is dedicated to the memory of journalist Daniel Pearl.
