Holmes attended Emerson College in 1991 after completing his high school education. When he finished his studies in 1995, he became a graduate and attained a Bachelor Of Science degree in Mass Communication with a focus on Broadcast Journalism as well as a Public Relations minor.

Previously, he worked for WTKR as a reporter and anchor for 8 years and 5 months. While at WTKR, he broadcasted Naval Station Norfolk during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Holmes worked for WEYI NBC25 as a weekend anchor and reporter from January 1997 to April 1999. During his time there, he broadcasted Saginaw and Flint, Michigan, which were big players in the US Auto industry. Additionally, he broadcasted the 54-day General Motors strike in 1998.
Before WEYI, he worked for WPBN in Traverse City as a sports director, news anchor, and reporter. He did a little bit of everything including producing and anchoring the morning news and reporting both sports and news.
He reported for New England Radio Sports Network where he broadcasted the Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics both at home and on the road. Further, he wrote and anchored radio reports to over two dozen of their affiliates across New England.
For 4 months, Holmes worked for the New York Penn League as a play-by-play announcer for the Pittsfield Mets Baseball Team. Further, he produced and anchored pre and post-game programs and announced the games.
