KGTV is an ABC-affiliated television station licensed to San Diego, California, in the United States. The E. W. Scripps Company owns the station. The Scripps Studios on Air Way in the Riverview-Webster neighborhood of San Diego house KGTV’s studios and the transmitter is located on Mount Soledad in La Jolla. KGTV operates the digital translator KZSD-LD (channel 20), which allows homes that are unable to receive KGTV’s VHF signal or only have a UHF antenna to receive KGTV in some form.
On September 13, 1953, the San Diego area’s third-oldest television station, NBC affiliate KFSD-TV, went on the air. Air fan Radio Corporation, which also owned NBC Radio Network affiliate KFSD, was the station’s original owner (600 AM, now KOGO). Channel 10’s call letters were changed to KogO-TV in 1961, and the radio stations followed suit. Time-Life bought the stations in 1962 and sold them to McGraw-Hill in 1972 in a group deal worth more than $57 million.
