Since he was a child, Amell has played hockey. He thought of going into the hockey industry before he found out about the acting industry. He secured his first role when he starred as Daniel Murtaugh in Cheaper by the Dozen 2. At first, he was not supposed to have any lines in the film but he ended up getting a few lines. In 2007, he starred in Left for Dead. Next, he starred in the lead role in Life with Derek. Further, he has starred in Picture This, True Jackson, VP,  Unnatural History, and Pretty Little Liars SN 3.

Amell played a recurring role on MTV’s Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous. He starred as Fred Jones in Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins and its 2010 sequel Sco oby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster. In 2013, he secured the role of Stephen Jameson in CW’s The Tomorrow People. The following year, he appeared in The DUFF as Wesley. In July of that year, he secured the role of Ronnie Raymond/Firestorm in The CW’s The Flash SN 1 and 3. Also, he recurred that role in Deathstorm SN 2 and 8. He starred as FBI Agent Miller in SN 10 of The X-Files. Next, he appeared in Nine Lives, The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, and Code 8, where he also worked as its executive producer.

Between 2013 and 2014, Amell starred as Stephen Jameson in CW’s The Tomorrow People. Stephen is an 18-year-old teenager living in New York City with his younger brother and mother. He meets Cara Coburn(Peyton List) who tells him the reason behind strange incidents happening around him like waking up in strange places with no recollection of how he got there and hearing voices in his head.

Cara informs him that he is just like his father, the most powerful of The Tomorrow People, and they are being hunted by an organization named Ultra. The Tomorrow People/Homo superior are humans who have evolved to exhibit psionic abilities including the “Three T’s” – Telepathy, Teleportation, and Telekinesis. He decides to work for Ultra as a double agent to find out what happened to his missing father and his whereabouts.

Amell starred in the role of Ronnie Raymond / Firestorm, Deathstorm in CW’s The Flash. Ronnie worked as a structural engineer for the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator before it exploded.
