Mitchell works for WKYC  serving as an anchor and a reporter. Prior to joining WKYC-TV, he was serving as a Nationa Correspondent and Anchor at CBS News from February 1992 to December 2011. In 1993, he was named as the correspondent for Eye-to-Eye alongside Connie Chung. Additionally, Russ was also assigned to the CBS Washington bureau in 1995. Additionally, he served as a co-anchor of CBS News Saturday Morning in July of 1997.

Whereby he traveled as a reporter for the CBS Evening News alongside Dan Rather and 48 Hours. In addition to that, Mitchell interviewed then-President Laurent Kabila in the Democratic Republic of Congo, covered the war in Bosnia, and reported from India, The Marshall Island, Indonesia, and Cuba. In addition, Russ won on the desk with Dan Rather repo0rting from Ground Zero and another part of Manhattan on September 11, 2001. Before Mitchell worked at KMOV-TV where he served as a reporter and anchor for 5 years.

Previously he had spent two years at KTVI-TV serving as a reporter. Prior to that, Russ worked at KMBC-TVkansas, city, Missouri for 8 months. Furthermore, Russ has won both local and national Emmy awards for his outstanding work. Additionally, he received other awards such as the New York Association of Black Journalists Award for Best Documentary. He also won the press club of St. Louis 18th Annual Media person of the year award.

Moreover, Mitchell received the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award for his coverage of the Elian Gonzales story. He also won the National Association of Black journalists Award. The University of Missouri School of Journalism honored him with the Missouri Honor in 2007. Furthermore, Russ graduated from a high school in Webster Groves in suburban St. Louis. Later on, he enrolled at the University of Missouri where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1982.
