Steve Horstmeyer is a retired American award-winning veteran meteorologist who previously worked for WXIX FOX 19 as the chief meteorologist. In 2025, he retired after 48 years of service to the Cincinnati region, including nearly 2 decades at WXIX. His last day on-air at WXIX was on August 28, 2025.

Steve Horstmeyer Education

Horstmeyer joined Miami University in Oxford in 1971 after finishing his studies at Moeller High School. In 1975, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Earth Science and Mathematics Education. He attained his Master’s degree in Geography with an emphasis in Meteorology from the University of Nebraska in 1976.

Horstmeyer previously worked as the chief meteorologist at FOX19/WXIX. In addition to his roles at the station, he was an active partner at Silent Partners Media. He also served the Department of Chemistry at the College of Mount St. Joseph as an occasional adjunct instructor. In addition to that, he also spent several years working at Miami University and the University of Cincinnati as a lecturer. 

Horstmeyer has also managed to win several awards ever since he started his journalism career. For instance, he was awarded the American Meteorological Society seal for both television and radio. He launched his career in 1977 when he volunteered for Sands at WLWT-TV, joining full-time in May 1978.

Horstmeyer taught math and earth science at Dater Junior High School in April 1977. He subsequently joined WKRC, where he did morning weather with Cammy Dierking and John Lomax. He then joined WXIX Channel 19 as the chief meteorologist in 2008.

Horstmeyer was a contributing editor to Weatherwise magazine and has authored or coauthored over a dozen articles. He was also a weather consultant to the industry and the legal profession on many occasions. While growing up, he used to watch Sands on Channel 5, the only Cincinnati station with its own radar. Despite being fascinated with the weather, he always thought he’d be a teacher.

During his career, he has covered 266 tornadoes, 2,166.22 rainfall, and 1,142.6 snowfall. He says his most memorable night was broadcasting live when an F-4 tornado outbreak passed through southern Illinois and Indiana and hit Harrison on June 2, 1990. On April 9, 1999, Cammy Dierking and Horstmeyer delivered live coverage from the scene of an F-4 tornado that claimed the lives of four people in the Blue Ash/Montgomery region near Sycamore High School

Horstmeyer suffered a major stroke while doing the weather on TV in 2021. He recalled that he couldn’t remember the days of the week while doing his 10 p.m. forecast. He also said that he had some issues with his right leg and right arm. He had no idea that he had suffered a stroke for four days. The doctor told him that he had suffered a major stroke due to stress, noting that the impact wasn’t severe because he was in good shape. He wanted to retire then, but later postponed his retirement. To reduce his workload after the stroke, he stopped teaching at Mount St. Joseph University.
