Daniel Winn Biography
Daniel Winn is an American anchor/reporter working for WGEM as an evening anchor. He joined the WGEM team in May 2022, after previously working for KWWL.
In 1999, he joined McKendree University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 2003. Central Illinois is his native home and throughout his career, he has worked in television and radio for over 14 years, and during his time, he has worked in Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa. While serving as a reporter, his stories have been honored by the Kansas City Press Club. Winn also earned an Emmy nomination for his breaking news coverage of a massive warehouse fire in St. Louis.
Daniel has also worked in Columbia, Missouri for 6 years, and during that time, he worked at KMIZ as the co-anchor of the 5 pm newscast. While he was in Mid-Missouri, he served as a reporter and field anchor during the riots in Ferguson, Missouri after the shooting of Michael Brown. In addition, Winn reported live from the Missouri State Penitentiary and Boone County Jail when Ryan Ferguson was released after being convicted of murder and spending ten years in prison.
Later on, he relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma where he worked at KJRH, Channel 2 as the co-anchored the morning and midday news. While he was in Tulsa, he became more familiar with wall-to-wall severe weather coverage. While he worked for almost 2 years in Tulsa, he covered many severe weather events, however, his most memorable was covering the tornado that hit Mid-Town Tulsa. In addition, he also did a story on squatter’s rights and exposed loopholes in state laws that allowed squatters to reside in luxury homes for free.
Over the years, he has covered five governors and presidential visits from former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump inclusive of former Vice President Mike Pence. Not long ago, he worked at KWWL, the NBC affiliate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he served as an anchor for 4 years. He also interviewed Congresswoman Ashley Hinson and Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst. Furthermore, during his leisure time, he enjoys spending time with his family, watching soccer and softball games, and walking around town.
