Abby Turpin is an American former anchor and producer who is best known for her time at KWWL where she was an evening co-anchor at 5 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm alongside Ron Steel. She also served as the executive producer for the nightside team. She left KWWL on September 1, 2021, and began working for a national non-profit organization as a director of communications. 

Abby Turpin Career

Ohio is her native home and she attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee where she graduated proudly. Before she joined KWWL, she worked at RFD-TV in Nashville where she served as the main anchor. She joined the cable network with experience from three CBS and NBC stations; WNWO in Toledo, Ohio, KOLN in Lincoln, Nebraska, and KXII in Sherman, Texas. In addition, Abby has always been very active in the community and this was the pinnacle of her work in news broadcasting.

While residing in Lowa, she quickly and naturally blended with the eastern Iowa community and as a result, she got an invitation in November 2017, as a keynote speaker by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Northeast Chapter at the National Philanthropy Day luncheon. Turpin led a monthly initiative known as Abby’s Little of the Month and Waiting for my Mentor at KWWL while she served as the Celebrity Ambassador for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa. In addition, she was named as 2018, Program Champion of the Year while she served as a member of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa.

Furthermore, she is a member of the Women for Good with the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa which works to impact the lives of women and girls in Black Hawk County. Turpin is also a member of the Business and Professional Women of Iowa organization. She was involved with Cedar Valley Hospice and in 2017, she served as the emcee of their Release & Remember event, the 2019 Red Carpet Nights fundraiser, and the 2018 Rio Nights fundraiser. Over the years, Turpin has spoken to local organizations such as; the Waterloo Rotary Club, Cedar Valley Jaycees, Cedar Falls Kiwanis Rough Risers, Cedar Falls Lions Club, Exchange Club of Waterloo, and at many local churches.

She has served on the KWWL United Way committee and as of the moment, she serves on a steering committee for a rebranding project at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. At both the 2017 and 2018 Pink Ribbon Runs, she volunteered as a guest judge in support of men and women fighting breast cancer in Cedar Valley. In 2018 and 2019, she served as the emcee of the Cedar Bend Humane Society’s Help Us Help Them fundraiser that was able to raise thousands of dollars to assist the humane society’s mission.

Together with her husband, they volunteered their home on the 2017 Grout Museum District Tour of Classic Homes. The couple also hosted a Holiday Vacations tour to Hawaii in 2018 that had about 50 KWWL viewers. For all her work, she was named in 2019 by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier as one of the “20 Under 40” in the community.

Over the years, her work in anchoring and production has received recognition with industry awards. She won a regional Edward R. Murrow award in 2021, under the Continuing Coverage category. Abby also received an Upper Midwest Emmy® for best evening newscast in 2018, for serving as the co-anchor of KWWL News at 6. Furthermore, together with Ron Steele, they received the 1st place award in the Excellence in Anchoring category from  The Iowa Broadcast News Association in both 2019 and 2020.

Three Upper Midwest Emmy nominations in the categories of politics/government and newscast-evening program were awarded to Abby and her team for; their Caucus Night coverage in 2019 and their, Coronavirus. Facts. Not Fear is a special program. She was also part of the team that received an Emmy nomination for a 2014 broadcast she co-anchored and produced in Nebraska. Furthermore, she has also received anchoring awards from the Ohio Associated Press and CableFax. For Turpin’s reporting, she was recognized in 2012 by the Texas Public Health Association with its Media Award.

In addition, she continues sharing her voice in the community from traveling the world while performing on cruise ships and on national tours to singing in shows at Tokyo Disney. At the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, Abby and her husband performed a show for more than 1100 people in July 2019. The show was able to raise more than $22,000 for the music programs. Together, they also did a show in April 2019 that helped raise money for renovating the historic Snowden House in Waterloo.

Furthermore, she was also heard singing at the American Cancer Society’s Relay with the Waterloo Municipal Band during the 2018 Cedar Valley Honor Flight fundraiser. Turpin and her husband sang in 2017 together with the UNI New Horizons Band at their fall concert in addition to singing the National Anthem in 2018, at Team of Dreams.
