The studios for both stations are located on North Market Street and Deer Park Road in northeast Shreveport, while KMSS-transmitter TVs is southeast of Mooringsport.

The allocation of channel 33 was contested by seven groups competing for approval by the Federal Communications Commission. On June 12, 1982, the first application to broadcast over the frequency was filed. On December 7, 1984, administrative law judge Byron E. Harrison granted a motion to resolve disqualifying issues raised by Media South Communications. On April 11, 1985, Channel 33 went on the air for the first time. It was the market’s fifth commercial television station in Shreveport–Texarkana. Channel 33 was the market’s first independent station to sign on. KMSS-TV broadcasted in stereo from the start.
