Alissa Carlson is an American Emmy award-winning meteorologist working at KCAL9 and CBS 2 where she serves as a freelance meteorologist who can be seen at 4 pm and 5 pm on KCAL 9 and CBS 2. She joined the KCAL 9 and CBS 2 teams in 2022, after previously working at KGET-TV where she was the chief meteorologist till July 1, 2021, when she left the station.  

Northwest Illinois is her native home and she was brought up on a farm thus she gained an interest in weather from an early age. Carlson would watch severe storms with her dad and during tornado warnings, she would go to the basement.

Since her mother was a journalist, she would encourage her to watch the news every night and read the newspaper on a daily basis. In addition, while she was in high school, she made a decision to become a broadcast journalist just like her mother. Alissa secured a part-time radio DJ job on a local AM station.

Later on, she joined Illinois State University where she earn a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism. She also studied at Mississippi State University where she earned a certificate in Broadcast Meteorology. While she was in college, she worked at WQAD in Moline, Illinois where she was an overnight news anchor thus being one of the youngest TV anchors in the country.

In addition, she also worked in her hometown television market before working in Greenville, North Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida. The Associated Press awarded her the Mark Twain Award for Best Weathercast in 2010 and she holds the prestigious Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association.

In 2009, and 2011, the Kern Press Club awarded her the Best Weathercast in Bakersfield award. She also received 4 consecutive Emmy awards from 2014 to 2018 while she worked at KGET News on the 5 pm newscast. Furthermore, she is also actively involved in many charity events as an emcee and she has assisted in raising money for organizations such as; the Bakersfield Homeless Center, Volunteer Center, SPCA, Children’s Miracle Network, and Gleaners.

She was selected for the cover of Bakersfield Magazine in February 2008. The American Heart Association selected her as part of its “Go Red For Women” campaign as a Lady in Red. From 2017 to 2019, she was the Circle of Red Chairman for the American Heart Association.

Being a regular attendee of St. Francis Catholic Church, for five years she served as a lector at St. Philip’s Catholic Church. Furthermore, she was honored in 2014 and 2015, as part of California State University-Bakersfield’s commencement ceremonies where she announced the names of the graduates. She is devoted to Bakersfield and in 2018, she earned a nomination for Humanitarian by the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards.
