Anita Blanton Biography

Anita Blanton is an American Anchor working at WAVY where she serves as an evening anchor during the 5 pm, 6 pm, and 11 pm newscast as well as WAVY News 10 at 10 pm on FOX43. She joined the WAVY team in March 2016, after previously working at KOCO-TV.

Blanton attended Abilene Cooper High School where she graduated proudly. Later on, she joined Hampton University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in broadcast journalism and political science. She was also named to the inaugural Top 40 Under 40 Alumni Class.

Prior to joining the WAVY team, she worked at KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where she worked for four years as a morning anchor. In addition, she started her career at KTXS-TV in Abilene, Texas where she served as a reporter. Later on, she joined KWTX-TV in Waco and WRIC-TV in Richmond, Virginia in Central Texas as a reporter and anchor.

A number of her most memorable reporting in her career involve severe weather including chasing tornadoes, anchoring all-to-wall coverage during two blizzards, and delivering live reports on one of the worst fire seasons in Texas history as it happened. Furthermore, while she was in Texas, she often visited world leaders in Crawford, Texas, and covered President George W. Bush. While working in Virginia, she was part of a team that covered a number of high-profile stories such as the Virginia Tech University tragic shootings.

Furthermore, she field anchored yearly coverage from the site of the Oklahoma City Bombing on that tragic event’s anniversary for three years. Over the years, she has won a number of awards while serving as a reporter and anchor including the Associated Press award and the Society of Professional Journalists award. In addition, Anita also received a number of community service awards such as a Star Legacy Award from the Urban League of Hampton Roads and a citation signed by the Governor of Oklahoma for her devotion to giving back.

Blanton has served as a spokesperson, volunteered, and sat on boards for a number of organizations as she assisted in creating mentoring groups for pre-teens and teens. She is also a certified personal trainer with a deep love for music and she was chosen to sing the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA team National Anthem for a period of two years. She is also a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and the National Association of Black Journalists.
