Art Norman Biography
Art Norman is a retired American journalist working for NBC Chicago part-time as a special contributor and co-host of “Tech Trends.” His “Making a Difference” segments air on NBC 5’s 5 p.m. newscast. He returned to the station in September 2011 after retiring in 2009.
Art Norman Education
Norman joined Johnson C. Smith University when he completed his high school education. Later, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Math and Physics.

In 2021, the National Association of Black Journalists gave him the Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award.
In February 1990, his initiative ushered an NBC 5 News exclusive investigation of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. The exclusive investigated claims of civil rights offenses during a suspicious drug raid on a suburban tavern.
In July 1982, he first joined NBC Chicago as a general assignment reporter. Before that, he worked for WMAR in Baltimore as a reporter and weekend anchor from 1979 to 1982. Previously, he reported at WPCQ and WSOC in Charlotte, North Carolina. He started his broadcasting in 1969 when he worked for WCCB in Charlotte as a TV engineer.
Aside from his journalism work, he has extensively involved himself with the community by hosting many community occasions yearly. Norman serves the United Negro College Fund as a spokesman and an on-air host of their telethon. Moreover, he serves as a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Additionally, he has a first-class F.C.C. engineer’s license.
Awards and Honors
During his career, Norman has received many awards and honors for his contributions to journalism. Recently, he won he received an Emmy Award for contributing to NBC 5’s broadcast of the Chicago Auto Show special. Also, he received an Emmy for broadcasting the Fox River Grove bus collision. He did a series called “Cops and Robbers,” which exposed secret files of police officers with criminal records. For the series, he won a national Investigative Reporters, Editors Award, and a 1992-93 Associated Press Best Investigative Reporting Award.
In 1989, he won a Chicago Emmy Award for contributing to NBC Chicago’s broadcast of the Laurie Dann story. Norman was crucial in NBC 5’s broadcast of the Beirut hostage situation where he provided extensive reports on the future of Geneva and St. Charles locals held hostage by terrorists. For this, he received an Emmy Award in 1986.
The Religious Public Relations Council granted him a Wilbur Award in 1987 for his documentary, “Giving God The Glory” which traced Chicago’s gospel history. In 1984, he won an International Radio and Television News Directors Award for providing live broadcasts of the shooting of a divorce court judge and an attorney in a Daley Center courtroom.
In 1987, Norman won a National Association of Educators’ School Bell Award in 1987 for documenting the predicament of poor children. He worked as a writer and photographer on NBC’s “Weekend Magazine” which won the George Foster Peabody Award in 1976. The previous year, he won North Carolina’s RTNDA Award for broadcasting a deadly air balloon wreck.
