Hicks joined the University of Virginia’s College at Wise in August 2018 when he finished his studies at Matoaca High School. In December 2023, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Sports Management, and Business Administration. During college, he wrote for the school newspaper, The Highland Cavalier.

Hicks works for WYMT as a news and sports reporter. Since the age of 5, he has played football and any sports he could think of. This is where his love for sports started. He served others which further pushed him to a passion for serving his community.
Hicks first tasted journalism in college while serving the school newspaper. He later left the newspaper due to the pandemic which led to the paper’s shutdown. This didn’t deter him from trying to progress his passion for serving the community through journalism. He called WYMT and asked for a sports journalist internship which he was granted.
During his six months interning at WTMT, Hicks learned that being a well-rounded reporter in all fields made one a great sports reporter. He went to many high school basketball games all over Eastern Kentucky and was overwhelmed with the atmosphere the public brought to the game, making him fall in love with Kentucky sports.
By the time his internship ended, Hicks had a newfound respect for Eastern Kentucky. Thus after graduating college, he joined WYMT as a hybrid reporter. He is thrilled to meet and create connections with new people all over the region and share the region’s stories.
