Steffen has been interested in the weather since he was young. Whne he was 8 years old, he had set up a weather station in his backyard and continued to phone in snow totals to the local TV station. In 1976, he made his first appearance on air to test the new cable TV in Winnetka, Ill.

Steffen has worked in West Michigan since November of 1974 and has worked in the region for more than 4 decades. After graduating college, Steffen joined WZZM as a meteorologist. In 1985, he was promoted to chief meteorologist at WZZM.

During his career, he has received many broadcast awards and is actively involved with the West Michigan community. For instance, he has served in the regional Math Counts Competition and the Science Olympiad. He is a fundraising honorary chair of the Grand Rapids Planetarium.
