WEAU-TV debuted on December 17, 1953, under the Central Broadcasting Company’s management. It has always been a principal NBC affiliate, however, it also broadcasted CBS, ABC, and DuMont programming at first. “Sheriff Bob” Dawson, who hosted a children’s show on WEAU in the 1950s and 1960s, was one of the first well-known personalities on the station. The station began broadcasting from a tower on South Hastings Way in Eau Claire, directly beside the WEAU studios. In 1956, a new 1,000-foot (300-meter) tower was built in the same position at 44°39′50′′N 90°57′41′′W, before a 2,000-foot (610-meter) tower was built close to Fairchild in 1966.
WEAU-DT, which formerly broadcast on channel 39, signed on with the digital transmitter at the top of the Fairchild tower on April 30, 2002. At 12:30 p.m., the station turned off its analog transmitter. 16th of February, 2009. WEAU’s digital signal was switched from channel 39 to channel 13 at about 1 p.m. By December 15, 2011, a replacement tower had been finished, and broadcasts on UHF channel 38 had resumed in late December. This tower collapsed on March 22, 2011, amid a severe winter storm that delivered a variety of bad weather conditions.
