Kelly Slifka Biography

Kelly Slifka is an American meteorologist working at WEAU where he serves as a morning meteorologist on the Hello Wisconsin morning news show. He joined the WEAU team in July 2014. 

Slifka earned a meteorology degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Slifka worked part-time at Weather Central while in college, creating graphics and forecasts for a variety of newspapers across the country. For Good Morning America, he also created graphics and spoke with meteorologists.

Later, Slifka relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to work for the National Weather Service. Slifka studied everything there is to know about the NWS and the incredible job they do safeguarding people and property. Meteorologists wouldn’t be able to accomplish their jobs without the NWS’s computer models and advanced radar devices. He began his career as a TV meteorologist at KOB-TV in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Later, he joined WEAU-TV in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as a morning meteorologist. Slifka returned to Madison, Wisconsin, where he worked as a weekend meteorologist for five years at the dominant No. 1 station, WISC-TV. On his birthday, May 31, 1998, he had an event that he will never forget.

Around 10 p.m., an uncommon yet extremely destructive “derecho” formed over Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota. With gusts of above 100 mph, this line proceeded eastward into western Wisconsin. The strength of this line didn’t fade until it reached eastern Michigan early the next morning. In the weather office, it had been a long night. In 2003, Slifka relocated to Austin to work at KVUE-TV as a weekend morning meteorologist.

He worked at KEYE-TV on and off since then and freelanced at KTBC-TV before joining the TWC News Weather on the 1s Team. Weather, sports, and leading an active lifestyle are all things that he enjoys. Kelly frequently plays beach volleyball and commutes by bicycle. Slifka, an ardent biker, rode his bike from Austin to Minnesota in the summer of 2013. Slifka traveled 1,300 miles in 16 days, touring tornado-ravaged communities of Granbury, Texas, and Moore, Oklahoma.
