He started in television as a reporter, producer, and anchor at WMDB-TV in Peoria, Illinois. Mueller was also an investigative reporter and state government reporter and anchor when he served for WTVC-TV in Chattanooga. He is popular for bringing his viewers major historical events such as covering the first space shuttle launch in 1981.

He also was the first reporter to talk to Jimmy Carter about the release of the hostage in Iran, and he was present when President Jimmy Carter returned to Plains, Georgia, after leaving the White House. Aside from covering several Democratic and Republican Presidential Conventions and 2 Presidential Inaugurations, Bob has brought his audiences one on one interviews with Jimmy Carter, Ronal Reagan, Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Al Gore, and George H.W. Bush.
