Wielgus attended Kempner High School graduating Magna Cum Laude. She then joined Texas A&M University from 2002 to 2006 graduating with a B.A. in Journalism and Spanish. In 2006, she joined Northwestern University and graduated in 2007 with an MSJ degree in journalism and broadcasting.

Wielgus started her broadcasting career on Television at Bloomberg in Washington D.C. Metro Area working from January 2008 to April 2008. In March 2008, she joined KYTX CBS19 in Tyler, Texas Area as a weekend anchor and reporter. She served there until June 2011, working for three years and two months. Hayley then joined WWSB-TV ABC 7, in Sarasota, Florida Area as an anchor for Good Morning Suncoast and Noon. She worked as an anchor for WWSB-TV ABC 7 for two years and 6 months from June 2011 to November 2013.

From November 2013 to October 2017, she served as an anchor and health reporter for ABC 7 News at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. at ABC 7 WWSB-TV for 4 years. She then joined WKRN-TV, which is under Nexstar Media Group, Inc. in Greater Nashville Area, Tennessee. She joined in October 2017 serving as an anchor for WKRN News 2 at 5, 6, and 10 p.m.

Hayley is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Special Olympics Tennessee from March 2018 to the present. She was a Certified Aquatics Coach for the Special Olympics Florida in Sarasota, Florida from May 2012 to May 2017. From May 2010 to August 2010, she was a Certified Aquatics Coach for the Special Olympics Texas in Tyler, Texas.

She has been honored with a Community Impact Award presented by the Junior League of Sarasota in May 2012. Wielgus then received an Edward R. Murrow Award, presented by RTDBA in May 2021 for her story on Nashville Christmas Day Bombing. Hayley also earned an Emmy Award in February 2022, for her story on the Christmas Day Bombing on News 2 at 10 by Midsouth Emmys. She received both the Edward R. Murrow and Emmy awards while serving as an anchor at WKRN-TV.
