Brandi Powell Biography
Brandi Powell is an American Anchor/Reporter/Multimedia Journalist(MMJ) working for KSTP-TV in St. Paul, Minneapolis Area where she serves the station as a Weekday Morning News Anchor. She has undertaken this role since August 2021.
Brandi Powell Education
Brandi attended the University of Nevada in Las Vegas where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies in the year 2004. While there, she was also minoring in Spanish. Asides from this, she also attended the UNLV Honors College. She has also been privileged o study abroad for a semester in Salamanca, Spain, and a summer in Barcelona, Spain.
She got her first broadcasting experience announcing the community calendars for a local jazz radio station. The year 2011 saw her earn her Master of Arts Degree in Anthropology from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Between the years 2009 and 2011, she was also a full-time graduate school student.

Powell works for KSTP 5 Eyewitness News team where she serves the station as a Morning News Anchor. There, she anchors the morning news from 4:30 to 5:30 AM and from 7 to 9 AM on KSTC 45 TV. Asides from this, she brings ‘The Loop’ & ‘To Make You Smile’ to KSTP’s “Minnesota Live” lifestyle show every weekday morning at 9 am. Before taking the morning anchor job, she served the station as a Weekend Anchor/Reporter between July 2015 and July 2021. She also served the station as a Reporter between January 2014 and June 2015.
The year 2020 saw her launch and report an in-depth series called Conversations About Racism and the Road to quality. This 3-part series includes Understanding Racism, Youth Activists & Education, and The Talk. Her team was privileged to win a Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists One Award for Special Project/In-depth Series in the year 2021.
While working at KSTP-TV, he has also served as a daily contributor on Minnesota Live. Asides from this, she has filled in as a host on At Issue and worked as a co-host on Twin Cities Live and Minnesota Live. She was also selected to be in the Prince and Mary Tyler Moore REELZ specials, giving on-air perspectives as a journalist and Minnesotan.
Between 2011 and 2013, she worked as a Reporter/Multi-Media Journalist for KNSD-TV(NBC&) in San Diego. Asides from this, she has also covered breaking news, politics, and crime. Brandi has also served as a regular on-air contributor for Politically Speaking, the station’s weekly political show. Asides from this, she has also served as a Video Journalist/Bell County Chief/Reporter for News 8 Austin(now known as Spectrum News- Time Warner Cable). There, he served between the years 2008 and 2009. Asides from this, she has also covered Fort Hood and its surrounding communities.
Brandi’s first on-air TV position was working as a Political Reporter for KFYR-TV(NBC Affiliate) station in Bismarck, North Dakota. Between the years 2006 and 2008, she covered statewide elections and legislative sessions. Powel was also on assignment in Guatemala for about two weeks, covering elections, education, and agriculture as she followed a group of North Dakota teachers doing an intercultural exchange.
She kick-started her career, behind the behind-the-scenes, working as a Production Assistant at MSNBC between the years 2005 and 2006. Asides from this, she has also worked as an Intern for the Washington Center, for the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City. This is in addition to working as an intern with Dateline NBC in 2004.

Powell is a proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists(NABJ) and Twin Cities Black Journalists(TCBJ). Asides from this, she also hosts and emcees events for a variety of community organizations. This include Urban League Twin Cities, Depart Smart, and Urban Ventures. Asides from this, she also moderates panel discussions. The year 2019 saw her volunteer weekly at Urban Ventures with its dynamic youth programs.
Powell has also been privileged to win multiple team Emmy Awards and earn an individual Emmy nomination, on an Upper Midwest Emmy nomination for Anchoring in the year 2020. She has also won a Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists Page One Award for Special Project/In-Depth Series in the year 2021.
Powell has also been privileged to receive two North Dakota Associated Press awards. The year 2014 saw her being selected to do a Voice-Over for part of a Shark Week episode. Asides from this, the year 2017 saw her being selected as the Keynote Speaker for the Patricia Adams Lecture Series(PALS) at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio.

Powell states that the name Keaton came from her daughter’s Great Grandmothers whose surname was Keaton and she was one of the most captivating and marvelous human beings, and so is Keaton. On the other hand, Zuri is a Swahili word for “Beautiful” and she is already carrying the name with integrity, inside and out.
Away from work, she enjoys traveling near and far with her loved ones and likes to experience different cultures. She is fluent in Spanish and has fun painting and doing all kinds of artwork.
